Relocating to Melbourne’s Inner South-East: A Guide to Toorak, Malvern and Armadale
For families and executives moving to Melbourne — a considered look at the leafy inner south-east, its schools and its trains, and how a furnished managed residence lets you settle into the neighbourhood before you commit to a long-term home.
Melbourne’s inner south-east has long been where relocating families and executives look first. The tree-lined streets of Toorak, Malvern and Armadale sit only a few kilometres from the city, yet feel established and quietly residential — period homes behind mature gardens, considered shopping strips, and some of the country’s best-known schools within a short drive. This guide sets out what makes the area work for a relocation, and why many families choose to live there for a while before deciding where to buy.
Where these suburbs sit
The three suburbs run together south-east of the city. Toorak, around five kilometres from the centre, is the most prestigious address; Malvern and Armadale, a little further out, are graceful, family-oriented and full of character. Armadale shares the 3143 postcode area and, like its neighbours, falls within the City of Stonnington. All three are close enough to the CBD for a genuine commute, yet far enough to feel like a proper neighbourhood.
Getting to the city
The area is well served by rail and tram. Toorak station reaches Flinders Street in about 12 minutes, while Armadale station on the Frankston line is roughly 14 minutes and around seven kilometres from the city. Toorak Road and High Street carry frequent trams into town as well. For a relocating executive, that mix of fast trains and trams is part of the appeal; our Toorak precinct guide explains how we position residences close to these lines.
Schools
For many relocating families, schooling decides the suburb. The inner south-east is unusually rich in well-regarded independent and Catholic schools, several of them within the three suburbs themselves. De La Salle College sits on High Street in Malvern; Lauriston Girls’ School is in Armadale; and Caulfield Grammar, Sacré Cœur and other established schools are all within an easy radius. Being able to live in the area first, and see the daily run to each school, is one of the strongest reasons to take a furnished residence before committing.
- De La Salle College — independent Catholic boys’ college on High Street, Malvern
- Lauriston Girls’ School — independent girls’ school in Armadale
- Caulfield Grammar and Sacré Cœur — among the established schools within an easy radius
- A short, walkable High Street and Toorak Road for everyday errands and cafes
The character of the streets
Part of what draws people to Armadale and Malvern is the shopping and the streetscape. High Street, Armadale is known for its antiques dealers, galleries and boutiques; Toorak Road offers the more polished end of the same idea. These are neighbourhoods to walk in the evening, not simply commute through, and that texture is difficult to judge from photographs — another argument for spending a season there before you settle.
Why settle in before you commit
Buying or committing to a long-term home in an unfamiliar city is a large decision to make from a distance. A furnished managed residence lets a relocating household live in the area first — test the school run, learn which streets they prefer, feel the commute in real peak-hour conditions — with none of the compromise of a hotel. It is the difference between guessing and knowing.
Our residences across the inner south-east are appointed to a single standard and looked after by one Guest Experience team, so a family arriving from interstate or overseas can move straight in and begin. Our Malvern precinct guide sits alongside the Toorak and Armadale precinct pages and gives a feel for each pocket.
When you are ready to look more widely, our Melbourne residences brings together everything we offer across the city, all appointed to The Westprecinct Standard.
A move to Melbourne is easier when the first months are settled. Living in the inner south-east before you buy lets the neighbourhood, the schools and the commute prove themselves — so the long-term decision, when it comes, is an informed one.
